COMPACT LINE-ARRAY SYSTEM
MAILA® SERIES
What is a PA system?
As the name “public address” already suggests, a PA system is used to provide amplified sound to an audience. Whether at a concert, in a club, in a church, or on the street – every PA system has the same basic structure and consists of at least two components: speakers and amplifiers.
Depending on the size of the room and audience as well as the type of event, PA systems differ in their technical set-up, dimensions, and equipment.
To offer musicians, bands, DJs, and event technicians the best PA system for every application, LD Systems has continued to expand its PA portfolio over the years.
Up next, we’ll take a closer look at the most important players and components in PA systems:
Active PA system
With an active PA system, the amplifier (more precisely: the power amplifier) is already built into the speaker. This offers several advantages for amateur and semi-professional use:
- An active PA system is more compact and easier to transport.
- You don’t have to worry about whether the speaker and power amplifier are compatible. The components in an active PA system are usually perfectly matched.
- You don’t have to wire the PA system and power amplifier separately.
- An active PA system can include additional components and features, such as a DSP, a mixer section, digital effects, Bluetooth, and more.
LD Systems offers you a great variety of active PA systems for different applications – either as a complete PA set or as individual components that you can combine in a set as you like. A selection is provided here:
Passive PA system
With a passive PA system, the PA speakers do not have an integrated power amplifier, meaning they need an external amplifier.
You should keep the ratio between the power amplifier’s output power and the speakers’ RMS capacity (both in watts) in mind when you combine passive speakers and power amplifiers!
The speakers can be damaged by both power amplifiers that are too powerful or too weak.
The general rules here are:
- Speakers and power amplifiers should offer or absorb more power than you actually need so that the components aren’t always operating in “red zone”.
- The power amplifier should be roughly equivalent to the added total power (RMS) of the connected speakers (slightly under- or overpowered is fine).
Example:
A selection of LD Systems’ passive PA speakers and power amplifiers is provided here:
Subwoofer
Subwoofers are much more than just the low-frequency amplification of a PA system. They also influence the overall PA sound by “reducing” the energy-intensive bass reproduction on the top speakers.
That’s why a full-fledged PA system supported by a subwoofer – also known as a 2.1 system – is the ideal choice for bands and DJs in particular.
In general, a subwoofer is not required for speech applications since the frequencies of the human voice (except for beatboxers and the like) do not require separate bass amplification.
A traditional 2.1 PA stereo configuration with two top speakers and a subwoofer is shown below:
If you don’t want to worry about which top speakers go with which subwoofer, you can simply use our complete PA sets.
Monitor
A monitor is a PA speaker that has been specially developed to amplify the sound of musicians or speakers on stage.
It is generally placed on the stage floor, meaning it comes in a different design and features a specially adapted dispersion angle. Nevertheless, there are monitors that can also be used as PA speakers, such as our active stage monitors from the MON G3 series with an integrated DynX DSP processor for dynamic and high-resolution sound in any application:
Column systems
Column systems are a special form of PA system that combines a subwoofer with a column element in which several small individual speakers are arranged vertically.
For many years now, column systems have been an integral part of sound amplification at concerts and events – singer-songwriters, smaller ensembles, and DJs in particular rely on the plug-and-play benefits of column systems:
- Compact design
- Easy transportation
- High degree of mobility (especially with integrated rechargeable battery)
- Fast assembly
- Harmonious sound with far-reaching range
Thanks to the MAUI series, LD Systems has had its own column PA series on the market since 2011. It is now available in its third generation and is one of the leading column systems with its sound across all model sizes.
The MAUI 44 G2 with 1,500 W RMS power is also suitable for full-size bands, while the MAUI 5 GO can be used almost anywhere as a mobile PA system with an integrated rechargeable battery.
Line arrays
The line array is the top tier of PA systems and has revolutionised professional sound amplification. Just like a column system, several speakers are arranged vertically as point sources in a line array.
Sound waves can be coupled together acoustically by minimising the distance between the individual sound sources and using waveguides (for targeted sound bundling and guidance). This allows the sound power to be mutually amplified, so that even large areas can be covered with a line array with less speakers than previously required.
In order to reach all members of the audience – even those nearby the stage – with a line array suspended at same height, line arrays are mounted vertically on a curve, which is why they are also known colloquially as “banana arrays”.
Purchasing a PA system? Things to pay attention to!
Do you need a PA system for a concert or other event? Two options are available to you: buy or rent.
In both cases, you need to give some advance thought to the purpose for which you require a PA system and how many people it will be used to deliver amplified sound to.
Five examples of sound amplification situations are provided below. Each one has its own requirements and needs a different PA configuration.
1. Live concert: rock band
Situation: a rock band (vocals, 2× guitar, bass, drums) playing a concert in front of approx. 300 people
Requirements: range, power reserves, full-range sound with powerful bass range, monitoring
Typical set-up: 2.1 PA
Our recommendation: STINGER IMPACT SET + MON G3 stage monitors
2. Live concert: acoustic ensemble
Situation: a small acoustic ensemble (vocals, acoustic guitar, stage piano) playing a gig in a bar in front of approx. 100 people
Requirement: easy transport, quick set-up, integrated mixer
Typical set-up: column PA
Our recommendation: MAUI 5
3. DJ
Situation: a DJ playing at a party who brings their own PA system
Requirement: transport in one’s own car, powerful and deep bass, variety of connections
Typical set-up: 2.1 PA or column PA
Our recommendation: DAVE 18 G4X or MAUI 44 G2
4. Speaking
Situation: people standing/sitting on a stage and speaking to an audience via microphones
Requirement: speech intelligibility, homogeneous dispersion, integrated sound processing
Typical set-up: array system
Our recommendation: CURV 500 ES
5. Lounge/background music
Situation: subtle background music for a reception, wedding, or corporate event
Requirement: elegant appearance, hi-fi sound quality, Bluetooth for wireless music playback
Typical set-up: column PA
Our recommendation: MAUI P900
Mixer
A mixer’s basic function is to combine audio signals from several signal sources (for example, microphones, instruments, players) into a sum signal and to then play it on a PA system.
Mixers come in all sizes of channels (from two-channel DJ mixers to professional consoles with hundreds of channels) and features (for instance, with/without effects, DSP, buses, groups).
Mixers that are already built into an (active) PA speaker are very convenient and mobile, allowing you to connect multiple signal sources directly to your PA system.
Since external mixers are generally used for concerts, a selection of LD Systems mobile PA systems with built-in mixers, which are perfect for impromptu gigs, street musicians, and mobile DJs, is provided below:
Amplifiers/power amplifiers
In the PA industry, an amplifier or power amplifier is used to enhance the low-voltage sum signal from a mixer (or an individual signal) so a PA system can reproduce it with the appropriate power.
While active PA systems have a built-in power amplifier, passive speakers require external power amplifiers. In general, these are available as two-channel or four-channel power amplifiers and may be analogue (Class AB or Class H) or digital (Class D).
Power amplifiers with an integrated DSP are particularly versatile, as they carry out similar tasks as a PA speaker with DSP (for example, EQ, limiter, crossover).
LD Systems offers PA power amplifiers for every application:
Accessories
The right accessories make life as a travelling musician much more convenient.
Your appreciation for specialised accessories will grow the more often you travel with a PA system. In addition to high-quality cables for the reliable and trouble-free connection of all components, our well-designed and custom-fit bags and cases keep everything organised and also save you time and hassle.
It also never hurts to have an extra microphone with you in case of an emergency ...
Cables
Cables are the unsung heroes of event technology that hold everything together.
There is no sound without cables, and even the best PA system won’t help. Whether jack cables for connecting instruments, XLR and speaker cables to connect the mixer, power amplifier, and PA system together, or mains cables for a reliable power supply: If you cut corners here, you’ll ruin your entire signal chain and will always have trouble with interference, humming, and signal interrupters.
The cables and connectors in the Adam Hall® Cables range fulfil professional requirements and are available from numerous specialist and online dealers.
Bags
You can often fit more in a bag than you think. The same goes for the PA bags from LD Systems. Whether STINGER, DAVE, ICOA, or MAUI – LD Systems provides you with the perfect transport and storage solution for a myriad of PA speakers.
The products range from padded protective covers to carrying bags with plenty of storage space for cables and other accessories to all-in-one transport sets with an integrated trolley.
Cases
Flight cases are the ideal solution if you want to transport your PA system as safely as possible. Adam Hall® Hardware is one of the pioneers in this field and offers professional components for case design.
You can use the specialist dealer search to find plenty of suppliers who provide the right Adam Hall® Hardware case for your PA components (for instance, speakers, amplifiers, mixer).
